PROGRAM NOTE:
Dawn, Where Are You Now? by Sami Anguaya is a piece about searching for light in uncertain times. Weaving together fragments of original lyrics, Dawn, Where Are You Now? is a pleading for peace – both to an implied higher power (the dawn) and to the text’s subject. In moments of pain, time can feel simultaneously static as well as slipping through one’s fingers. In this piece, the composer explores this through slow legato phrases in the choir juxtaposed with an incessant and persistent ostinato in the instrumental accompaniment.
