Our Mission and Our Choirs

Our Mission

At Modern Sound Collective, we aim to foster a nurturing community that inspires young artists through accessible opportunities for growth and collaboration, and to share our love of contemporary choral music through sincere and passionate performances.

Modern Sound Collective is a by-youth-for-youth choral organization whose aim is to foster a nurturing community that inspires young artists. MSC provides accessible opportunities for growth and collaboration, and shares their love of contemporary choral music through sincere, passionate performances and regular commissions of new music. MSC was founded in 2015, and has premiered over 50 new choral works by more than 25 early-career composers. They run four different choral programs for youth and young adults, and celebrate the power and joy of collective music making and its power to bring people together.

They welcome singers of all backgrounds and experiences to be a part of their vibrant choral family. Members of Modern Sound Collective have the opportunity to grow as a musician and person, forge lifelong friendships, and contribute to the joyous experience of collective music-making. Throughout their musical journey, MSC has had the opportunity to perform with a wide array of talented and inspiring musical ensembles and at festivals, including appearing in concert with the Toronto Symphony Orchestra, the Green Room Music Collective, at SING! Festival Toronto, with the Chamber music society of Mississauga, and as a featured guest artist with the Exultate Chamber Singers.

Our Choirs

70 Voices - Summer

Frisson is a non-auditioned choir of 70 voices. They use an innovative leadership structure developed by the MSC’s artistic team, with a strong focus on collaborative leadership that allows every member to contribute their artistic vision to the collective development of the group. They rehearse from May-August in Toronto, and perform a variety of contemporary repertoire spanning genres and cultures. Over eight beautiful years of singing, Frisson has performed music from Indonesia, Korea, South Africa, Sweden, Latvia, and from all over Canada and the United States, and has premiered three new choral works and many new arrangements of pop songs by young composers from within the MSC community.

24 Voices - Summer

Sehnsucht is the MSC’s auditioned, summer-season chamber choir. Made up of 24 members, they present moving and immersive performances of both contemporary and classical choral music. Over the past ten years, Sehnsucht has premiered a wealth of newly composed Canadian works, including Benjamin Gabbay’s major work “Requiem l’homme armé” (Commissioned by Conductor Emeritus Victor Cheng), Sami Anguaya’s transcendently rhythmic “Lying Awake, Waiting”, and Katherine Petkovski’s stunning part-song “Warm Summer Sun”. Sehnsucht is available throughout the summer for hire to provide music for events or recordings.

80 Voices - Fall/Winter

Datsuzoku is a high-level, social, fun choral experience for young adults. We provide a platform for young adult singers to explore their artistic potential and hone their vocal and choral skills, and encourage singers and audiences alike to embrace the spirit of innovation and creativity. The experienced and dedicated artistic team comprises skilled conductors, vocal coaches, and musicians who are passionate about guiding young adults on a journey, celebrating collective and individual victories, and growing together. Each year, Datsuzoku performs 3 major concerts, including hosting the “Young Choral Artists Festival” for GTA choirs, as well as participating in collaborations with notable groups such as the Toronto Symphony Orchestra, the FILMHarmonic Orchestra, and the Amadeus choir. Datsuzoku is made up of 80 members, and is always open to welcoming new friends to the group.

Datsuzoku’s mission is centred around three principles of overall philosophy and programming. First, we strive to open a space for love, both by connecting a community of like minded people and by allowing them to authentically and fully express their passion in meaningful ways. Second, we aim to program music that will push the boundaries of expectation and understanding of choral music, both to develop our skills and to present fresh perspectives to audiences. Finally, we hope that through our rehearsals, concerts, and engagement with the choral community in the GTA and beyond, we will leave a positive and lasting impact on people, communities, and the world.

40 Voices - Fall/Winter

Concreamus is a 32 voice new music choir dedicated to innovation in the choral arts and the creation and performance of excellent new works by young composers. To date, the choir has premiered over 40 choral works by amazing early-career composers. Many of their premiere performances can be found on Spotify, Apple Music, and Youtube.
